Route 70 runs Burleigh Heads to Helensvale every 30 minutes, midnight to 4 am, Monday to Thursday. Of everything in the southern Gold Coast bus rebuild, it's the service I'd have watched hardest. From Monday the network across the southern Gold Coast was rebuilt around Light Rail Stage 3. Route 701 is the headline, every 15 minutes from The Pines and Elanora through Burleigh to Varsity Lakes and Robina. Route 70 is the old late night 700, extended to Helensvale, running on the nights the tram stops. In 2021 I worked on the community feedback report for Transport for NSW on proposed bus service changes across South East Sydney. More than 8,000 people had their say. What stayed with me was who wasn't in that number. The hardest people to reach are the ones whose travel happens outside the hours the consultation is designed around. Night shift workers, hospital staff, hospitality, cleaners. They rarely make a survey window and they are the first to feel a route change. A network change is communicated well when the person boarding at 1 am hears about it as clearly as the person boarding at 8 am. Reaching them is a design decision. The tram gets the ribbon. Route 70 gets the people who finish work when everyone else is asleep. #CommunityEngagement #PublicTransport #GoldCoast
